The Indian government has discontinued the sale of rice and wheat from the central pool under the Open Market Sale Scheme (OMSS) to state governments in an effort to curb rising prices. This decision will impact several states, including Karnataka, which offers free grains to the poor. The Food Corporation of India (FCI) recently issued an order stating that the sale of wheat and rice under the OMSS (domestic) for state governments is discontinued. However, rice will continue to be sold under the OMSS for northeastern states, hilly states, and states facing law and order situations and natural calamities at an existing rate of Rs 3,400 per quintal. The decision comes amid slow progress of the monsoon and increasing prices of rice and wheat in the country. With about 80% of the country’s total rice production grown during the kharif season, which starts next month, the government is taking steps to mitigate any possible deficit in supply due to the lack of rainfall.
