The Centre on Tuesday announced that the upcoming Digital India Act (DIA) will tighten the control of misinformation and ‘high-risk AI’ to maintain user safety. The first draft of the Bill is expected by the first week of June 2021. The Union Minister of State for Electronics and IT, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, stated that the government will not impose restrictions on AI, but rather, they will implement guardrails to prevent potential misuses. The DIA is also intended to create a more vibrant economy and enable the startup innovations. To tackle the issue of misinformation, Chandrasekhar said that the IT Rules currently cast the obligation on platforms to determine misinformation and if required, they could include a section of it in the DIA.
The Digital India Dialogues was arranged in order to develop a first draft of the Bill in the next few months. The key objectives of the Digital India Act are to make India a top digital economy worth a trillion dollars by encouraging digital products, platforms, and solutions within a secure environment.
