Cedar Rapids Prairie Secures Victory Over Iowa City Liberty Despite Challenges

Cedar Rapids Prairie faced a series of challenges in their recent game against Iowa City Liberty, but ultimately emerged as the victors in a closely contested matchup. The Hawks started the game on a high note, taking a commanding 21-0 lead early on. However, turnovers and penalties plagued them in the second half, preventing them from sealing the game. Despite these setbacks, Prairie managed to secure a hard-fought 38-30 win over the Lightning.

Coach Kyle Knock acknowledged that there is still work to be done, despite the team’s strong start. He praised his players for their early performance but expressed disappointment in their inability to capitalize on multiple chances to put the game away. Knock stated, We still have so much to clean up…we just didn’t have that killer instinct tonight.

One player who played a significant role in Prairie’s early success was Apollo Payne. The senior wide receiver caught two touchdown passes of 39 and 49 yards from quarterback Will Phillips in the first quarter. Payne, who finished the game with seven catches for 139 yards and two touchdowns, admitted that the team may have become overconfident after their strong start. However, he commended the team’s ability to rally together and secure the victory in the end.

Cedar Rapids Prairie seemed poised to cruise to an easy win when Casey Kelley broke loose for a 44-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter. Unfortunately, a fumble halted their momentum, allowing Iowa City Liberty to gain some ground. Liberty’s senior quarterback, Graham Beckman, threw over 50 passes throughout the game and managed to lead his team to their first touchdown with a 6-yard pass to Dallas Miller.

Coach Knock acknowledged the strength of the Liberty team, saying, They are a good football team…They made plays when they had to and were able to stay in the game. However, it was Casey Kelley’s impressive performance that kept Liberty at bay in the second half. Kelley scored two touchdowns on runs of 35 and 50 yards in the third quarter, totaling 209 rushing yards on 23 carries.

Beckman showcased his passing skills, throwing for an unofficial 363 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran for two two-point conversions, bringing his team within striking distance. However, his final touchdown pass to Cody Nichols fell short, leaving Liberty trailing by one score. Prairie was able to run out the clock after an unsuccessful onside kick from the Lightning.

Coach Knock credited Kelley, Payne, and Phillips for their leadership and ability to maintain control of the game. He emphasized the need to find more ways to get the ball in their hands, recognizing their electric playmaking abilities.

Looking ahead, Cedar Rapids Prairie (3-2) will return home to face Ankeny next Friday, while Iowa City Liberty (1-4) will host Cedar Rapids Washington.

Overall, Cedar Rapids Prairie’s victory over Iowa City Liberty was hard-fought, with both teams displaying resilience and determination. The Hawks showcased their potential but acknowledged the importance of addressing areas for improvement. With talented players like Kelley, Payne, and Phillips leading the way, Prairie aims to build on their successes and continue to compete at a high level.
