CBI Takes Custody of Accused in Manipur Nude Parade Case as Outrage Grows
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken custody of four accused persons in connection with the viral video showing two women parading naked in Manipur. The video, which has sparked widespread outrage, depicts the women being sexually assaulted before the public. Following the arrest of seven people by the Manipur police, the CBI’s Special Crime Branch Kolkata seized custody of the four alleged perpetrators.
During the court proceedings, the defense counsel for the accused individuals sought bail, claiming their innocence. On the other hand, the CBI counsel requested that the accused remain in police custody to identify other co-accused individuals involved in the incident. The CBI also aims to investigate the chronological events leading up to the crime and gather information about the organization allegedly linked to the accused, as mentioned in the FIR.
After considering the submissions from both sides and reviewing the case records, the court decided to transfer the investigation to the CBI. Subsequently, the court ordered the four accused individuals to be handed over to the CBI for a smoother investigation. The special court remanded the accused into three more days of CBI custody, extending it until August 2.
Meanwhile, in Mizoram, the state still awaits funds from the central government to provide relief to over 12,600 people who sought shelter after being displaced from Manipur. The Mizoram government has requested Rs 10 crore to support those currently residing in relief camps, church complexes, rented accommodations, and with their relatives. Chief Minister Zoramthanga wrote letters to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking financial assistance, and a Mizoram government team also met with the Union Home Secretary to expedite the release of funds. However, no financial aid has been received from the Centre thus far.
The state administration remains hopeful that the Union government will allocate funds for the displaced and violence-affected individuals. To support the affected population, the state government has urged legislators, government employees, bankers, and others to make donations towards relief efforts.
Among those displaced from Manipur, 4,440 individuals have sought shelter in Kolasib district, 4,265 in Aizawl, and 2,951 in Saitual. The remaining eight districts of Champhai, Mamit, Siaha, Lawngtlai, Lunglei, Serchhip, Khawzawl, and Hnahthial also have displaced individuals residing within their jurisdictions.
The CBI taking custody of the accused in the Manipur nude parade case marks a significant development in the ongoing investigation. As public outrage continues and the search for justice intensifies, all eyes are on the CBI to unravel the truth behind this heinous crime. Meanwhile, Mizoram’s plea for financial aid highlights the pressing need to provide support and relief to the thousands of displaced individuals who have suffered due to the violence in Manipur. The state government’s determination to secure funds for the affected population remains steadfast, and they hope for prompt assistance from the central government to address this humanitarian crisis.
