Mumbai News: Fake CBI Officer Who Duped Rakesh Roshan Gets 3-Yr Jail

The Bombay High Court has directed the return of Rs 20 lakh to renowned filmmaker Rakesh Roshan, which had been fraudulently obtained by two conmen posing as officers of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) back in 2011. The Court emphasized that there was no reason to withhold the remaining amount, especially considering that Roshan had already been allowed to withdraw Rs 30 lakh.

In 2011, Ashwini Sharma from Haryana and Rajesh Ranjan from Mumbai approached Roshan, misrepresenting themselves as CBI officers, and persuaded him to pay them Rs 50 lakh in order to settle a dispute related to a complaint made by one of Roshan’s line producers. Later, Roshan realized that he had been deceived and falsely implicated. He subsequently filed a complaint with the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), which led to the registration of a first information report (FIR) in August 2011.

After the case was transferred to the CBI, the agency discovered that the two accused individuals had defrauded several others as well. During their investigation, the CBI recovered documents of 21 immovable properties and an impressive sum of Rs 2.94 crores, which allegedly included Roshan’s Rs 50 lakh.

In 2012, Roshan filed an application with a special CBI court seeking the return of his money. The court partially granted his request and allowed the return of Rs 30 lakh. Additionally, the court asked Roshan to submit an indemnity bond for Rs 50 lakhs as security until the trial concluded.

However, in 2020, Roshan filed another application with the special court to reclaim the remaining Rs 20 lakh, which was still in the court’s possession. Unfortunately, the special court rejected his application on December 14, 2021, reasoning that Roshan was essentially seeking a review of the 2012 order that had already allowed the return of a portion of the money. The court also noted that Roshan had not challenged the earlier order and was now seeking the return of the entire amount.

Consequently, Roshan decided to approach the Bombay High Court in order to challenge the orders issued in 2012 and 2021. He argued that the 2012 order did not curtail his right to claim the remaining Rs 20 lakh. Moreover, he emphasized that he had already submitted an indemnity bond covering the entire amount of Rs 50 lakh until the trial concluded.

Roshan, who has been patiently waiting since 2012 for the trial to conclude and the amount to be returned, has thus sought the intervention of the Bombay High Court to ensure the return of his money.

The case serves as a reminder of the importance of thorough verification and caution, particularly when it comes to financial transactions involving substantial amounts. The Mumbai Police have also launched awareness campaigns to educate the public about such scams and to encourage individuals to report any suspicious activities promptly.

While Roshan continues to pursue justice, it remains to be seen how long it will take for the remaining Rs 20 lakh to be returned to him. In the meantime, this incident serves as a cautionary tale for others who may fall victim to similar fraudulent schemes.

In conclusion, the Bombay High Court’s directive to return Rakesh Roshan’s Rs 20 lakh highlights the importance of effectively combatting financial fraud and ensuring that victims are not left empty-handed. The Court’s decision reaffirms its commitment to safeguarding the rights and interests of individuals, especially when they have been deceived by con artists posing as government officials.
