A non-governmental organization from the United Kingdom called Youth for Good Governance (YGG) has urged a Catholic Priest, Very Rev. Fr. Andrew Obinyan, to run for the governorship election in Edo state in 2024. The group, led by Comrade Victor Arigbe, which comprises youths from all 18 local government areas of the state, visited Fr. Obinyan in Benin City to make their request.
During the courtesy visit, Comrade Goodnews Ehiabhi expressed the belief that Fr. Obinyan is the ideal candidate to lead the state to greater heights. They have been closely following his activities and achievements over the years and recognize him as a man of integrity with a passion for human empowerment and infrastructural development. Fr. Obinyan’s philanthropic gestures have made a significant impact on the people and residents of Edo State, and his ability to connect with individuals from all walks of life solidifies his position as a true representative of the people.
The group pledged their total support for Fr. Obinyan and called on him to accept their invitation to join the race for governorship. They also advocated for transparency and good governance in the country. Additionally, the group expressed their intention to support the Edo central senatorial district in producing the next governor of the state in 2024, emphasizing the need for equity, fairness, and justice in the election process.
In response to the group’s request, Fr. Obinyan commended them for their confidence in him. As a man of prayer, he stated that he seeks God’s will on critical matters in his life and ministry. He acknowledged the timely and reassuring desires of the youth for good governance and expressed that he is prayerfully considering their request.
This call for a Catholic priest to contest the governorship election in Edo State comes after the victory of another Roman Catholic priest, Hyacinth Alia, in the last March governorship election in Benue state, representing the All Progressives Congress (APC). Furthermore, Pastor Azemhe Azena of the Omega Fire Ministry has also joined the Edo governorship race on the platform of the Labour Party (LP).
It remains to be seen whether Fr. Andrew Obinyan will accept the invitation extended to him by the Youth for Good Governance (YGG) and if his potential candidacy will resonate with voters in Edo State. As the 2024 governorship election approaches, the political landscape of Edo State may see the emergence of more candidates from diverse backgrounds, including religious leaders, who aim to contribute to the development and progress of the state.
