Indonesia’s govt calls for public vigilance over emerging Covid subvariants
JAKARTA – The Health Ministry is urging the public to remain vigilant as new Covid-19 subvariants continue to emerge both within Indonesia and globally. The ministry’s spokesman, Siti Nadia Tarmizi, disclosed that the number of novel coronavirus infections has surged from a mere 10 to 20 cases per week to 267 cases last week.
Recent data released by the ministry on December 6 revealed a daily increase of Covid-19 infections ranging from 35 to 40 cases, along with a rise in hospital admissions from 60 to 131 cases. While the number of Covid-19 deaths over the same period was not disclosed, a slight increase of 0 to 3 cases was observed.
Indonesia has seen an increase in infections related to the Omicron subvariants – EG.5, nicknamed Eris, and EG.2 – although the precise number of confirmed cases tied to these subvariants was not disclosed.
Typical symptoms of EG.5 infections mirror those of other subvariants and include fever, fatigue, runny nose, and sore throat.
The World Health Organization (WHO) designated the Omicron subvariant EG.5, along with its sublineages HK.3 and HV.1, as variants of interest (VOIs) in August. VOIs are less severe than variants of concern (VOCs) and indicate the relative prevalence and possible epidemiological changes associated with emerging subvariants that could pose a risk to global public health.
Currently, there is no evidence suggesting that EG.5 causes more severe symptoms. However, the WHO emphasized the necessity of a thorough risk assessment for emerging EG.5 sublineages like HK.3 and HV.1.
To ensure public safety, Ms. Siti advised individuals who are unwell, particularly the elderly, to wear masks. Additionally, she stressed the importance of seeking medical attention for individuals experiencing Covid-19 symptoms. Ms. Siti further reassured the public that the country possesses an ample supply of vaccines and encouraged everyone to complete their two-dose vaccination against Covid-19. However, she did not specifically mention the vaccines’ efficacy concerning the new subvariants.
In light of the situation, the ministry has advised people to postpone travel to countries currently experiencing an upsurge in Covid-19 cases.
Since being reported to the WHO in February, EG.5 has spread to over 90 countries, including China, the United States, and Singapore. The Omicron subvariant now accounts for slightly over half of the circulating global Covid-19 variants due to its immune evasion properties.
Singaporean health authorities have recently highlighted the necessity for heightened vigilance following an escalation in estimated Covid-19 infections. In the week from November 19 to 25, the number of cases doubled to approximately 22,000 compared to the previous week’s estimated 10,700 cases.
As the government calls for increased vigilance and precautions, it is crucial for individuals to remain informed and take necessary measures to protect themselves and others against the evolving threat of these emerging Covid-19 subvariants.
