Carville and Weiss Discuss Kamala Harris’s Future in 2024 Presidential Race
Democratic strategist James Carville and The Free Press founder Bari Weiss engaged in a spirited discussion about Vice President Kamala Harris’s prospects in the 2024 presidential race at the 2023 Texas Tribune Festival in Austin. During a live recording of Weiss’s Honestly podcast, the two analysts delved into the current state of the race and addressed the controversial suggestion that President Biden replace Harris on the ticket due to her low polling numbers.
Carville staunchly defended Harris, challenging the notion that she should be removed from the 2024 ticket in order to excite voters. He argued that Harris’s polling reflected a ceiling set by Biden’s own unpopularity and advocated for a competitive primary race to allow her and other candidates to engage with voters.
Weiss, however, voiced her skepticism, comparing Harris’s speaking style to that of the fictional character in the HBO comedy series Veep. Carville remained steadfast in his support for Harris, drawing parallels between the criticism she faces and the treatment of Hillary Clinton. He asserted that female politicians are often unfairly characterized, and emphasized that while Harris may not be the most extraordinary public speaker, much of the criticism directed at her is a result of stereotyping.
Weiss, a woman and a member of the LGBTQ+ community, disagreed with Carville’s argument, stating that she is not turned off by powerful women in politics. Carville clarified that he was not insinuating that Weiss was personally turned off by Harris or other women in politics, but rather highlighting the perception certain qualities are attributed to female politicians based on gender.
Acknowledging that Harris may not be one of the all-time greats, Carville nevertheless praised her determination to run for president and succeed. He emphasized that failure is a common aspect of politics and suggested that Harris still possesses significant potential, as recognized by the media.
The discussion between Carville and Weiss offered differing viewpoints on Harris’s future in the 2024 presidential race. While Carville defended her against criticism and highlighted the challenges faced by female politicians, Weiss remained skeptical, hinting at concerns about Harris’s speaking style. As the race progresses, it remains to be seen how Harris’s polling and public perception may impact her standing within the Democratic Party.
