Cardiff University Experts and Students Tackle Wales’ Biggest Issues at National Eisteddfod

Cardiff University experts and students will be participating in discussions on some of the major issues affecting Wales at this year’s National Eisteddfod. The events, taking place from August 5 to 12 in Boduan, North Wales, will cover a wide range of academic disciplines including politics, biosciences, journalism, literature, and medicine.

One of the highlights of the Eisteddfod will be a discussion with Dr Dylan Foster Evans from the School of Welsh on a collaborative project with Snowdonia National Park Authority and the Welsh Language Commissioner. This project aims to collect and standardize place names in Eryri. Another talk will be led by Professor Richard Wyn Jones from the Wales Governance Centre, who will delve into the origins of the book titled The Welsh Criminal Justice System: On the Jagged Edge and present the latest data.

Professor Arwyn Jones from the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences will also share the lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic, offering valuable insights. Additionally, students from the School of Medicine will record their latest podcast, focusing on women’s health and the menopause, providing a platform for discussion.

Moreover, the Cardiff University stand will host engaging activities for both children and adults. The Medicines Discovery Institute will showcase the process of identifying new drugs for brain diseases through interactive experiments and displays. The stand will also showcase the remarkable properties of blue-green algae, while medical students will be available to offer blood pressure readings and guidance.

Dr Huw Williams, the Cardiff University Dean for the Welsh Language, expressed excitement about the events and activities planned for the Eisteddfod. He emphasized the opportunity to share the remarkable work being done by academics and students to address important issues in Wales. The university aims to contribute to the celebration of Welsh language and culture, while also highlighting their commitment to Welsh-medium education.

Furthermore, alumni of Cardiff University will have the chance to gather for a reception, providing an opportunity for past and present members of the university community to reminisce. On a similar note, there will be a celebration for the first-ever Welsh-language Sabbatical Officer for the Students’ Union, reinforcing the university’s commitment to expanding the Welsh-language student experience and engaging a wider student community around Cymraeg.

Professor Williams concluded by encouraging prospective students to visit the Cardiff University stand and learn more about the offerings available at the institution.

This year’s National Eisteddfod promises to be an exciting and educational event, bringing together experts, students, and the wider community to discuss and tackle some of Wales’ biggest issues. With a diverse range of topics and engaging activities, the Eisteddfod highlights the important role Cardiff University plays in addressing these issues and its commitment to Welsh culture and education.
