Cambodian Athletes Shine with 18 Medals at World Police and Fire Games

Cambodian athletes have made their mark at the 20th World Police and Fire Games in Winnipeg, Canada, bringing home a total of 18 medals as of Monday. Competing in various sports events such as volleyball, table tennis, swimming, and wrestling, the athletes from sports associations under the Ministry of Interior (MoI) have won nine gold and nine silver medals.

The volleyball team, representing one of the sports associations under the MoI, secured a gold medal after defeating Brazil 3-0 in the final match. In addition to this victory, the table tennis team claimed two gold and three silver medals, while the swimming team earned three gold and two silver medals. The wrestlers stood out as well, winning three gold and four silver medals.

A delegation of sports delegates from the MoI’s sports associations departed from Cambodia on Monday last week to participate in the games. With their sights set on success, a total of 48 athletes competing in thirteen sports, including badminton, weightlifting, judo, jiu-jitsu, karate, swimming, table tennis, volleyball (both indoor and beach), wrestling, arm wrestling, weightlifting, and golf, proudly represent Cambodia.

Sar Sith, MoI Undersecretary of State and in charge of the General Secretariat of the Ministry’s Sports Council, expressed his optimism about Cambodia’s chances, saying, We have high hopes for all our athletes. He also highlighted the significance of the tournament as a unique opportunity for athletes to forge connections and showcase their talents on an international stage.

In the previous edition of the World Police and Fire Games held in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, Cambodian athletes achieved impressive results, securing a total of 33 medals. Arm wrestling emerged as the most successful sport, clinching six gold and one silver medal. Other notable achievements included jiu-jitsu with one gold, three silver, and one bronze medal, wrestling with three gold, one silver, and two bronze medals, and judo with three bronze medals.

Meanwhile, table tennis claimed one bronze, karate won one gold, two silver, and two bronze medals, taekwondo secured three gold medals, badminton took home one bronze and one silver, and weightlifting earned one gold medal.

The World Police and Fire Games, a biennial sporting event, welcomes both active and retired law enforcement and firefighting personnel from around the world. Participants compete in over 60 sporting events, representing their respective countries and showcasing their skills and sportsmanship.

With more than 70 countries participating in this year’s edition, the games will provide a platform for camaraderie, healthy competition, and the celebration of athletic achievements. As Cambodian athletes continue to shine on the international stage, they bring honor to their nation and inspire future generations to pursue excellence in sports.
