MLB Games in California Rescheduled Due to Hurricane Hilary

Three Major League Baseball (MLB) games scheduled to take place in California over the weekend have been rescheduled due to the forecast for Hurricane Hilary. The league is making adjustments to ensure the safety and well-being of the players, staff, and fans.

Hurricane Hilary, currently a Category 4 storm, poses a potential threat to the region. The Arizona Diamondbacks had planned to conclude their four-game series with the San Diego Padres on Sunday, while the Tampa Bay Rays were set to face the Los Angeles Dodgers, and the Miami Marlins were scheduled to play against the Los Angeles Angels.

To avoid any risks associated with the approaching hurricane, all three of these games will now be played as doubleheaders on Saturday. This decision was made with the safety of everyone involved as the top priority.

The new schedule will require adjustments from the teams, but the managers understand and appreciate the proactive approach taken by MLB. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts expressed gratitude for the league’s response, acknowledging that while it may inconveniences some people who had tickets for Sunday, prioritizing safety is essential.

It’s certainly going to be an inconvenience for some people that had Sunday tickets, but to at least get ahead of it made sense to me, said Roberts. He also emphasized the extraordinary nature of a hurricane affecting Southern California, calling it crazy and very unprecedented.

The first game of the San Diego doubleheader will begin at 12:10 p.m. local time, with the second game scheduled for 5:40 p.m. The Angel Stadium doubleheader will kick off at 1:07 p.m. local time, followed by the nightcap at 6:07 p.m. At Dodger Stadium, the doubleheader will take place at 12 p.m. and 6:10 p.m.

While such weather events are unusual for the region, Hurricane Hilary serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of nature. Angels manager Phil Nevin expressed both excitement and nervousness about the situation, emphasizing the rarity of a hurricane hitting Southern California.

As of now, Hurricane Hilary is expected to approach Mexico’s Baja California peninsula as a hurricane on Saturday night before weakening to a tropical storm as it moves towards Southern California on Sunday. It is worth noting that no tropical storm has made landfall in Southern California since September 25, 1939, according to the National Weather Service.

Meanwhile, the NFL has two preseason games scheduled in California over the weekend. The Los Angeles Rams are set to host the Las Vegas Raiders on Saturday, while the Los Angeles Chargers will welcome the New Orleans Saints to SoFi Stadium on Sunday. The status of these games has not yet been confirmed, and the league is expected to provide updates soon.

While the games may face disruption due to Hurricane Hilary, the priority remains the safety and well-being of all individuals involved. MLB’s decision to reschedule the games as doubleheaders reflects their commitment to ensuring a secure environment for players, staff, and fans.

As the situation unfolds, it is essential for everyone to stay informed and take necessary precautions. Hurricane Hilary serves as a reminder that nature can be unpredictable, and it is crucial to prioritize safety above all else.
