LOS ANGELES – A shocking incident took place on Interstate 105 in Lynwood, Southern California, as a California Highway Patrol (CHP) officer fatally shot a man during a scuffle on the closed freeway. The disturbing confrontation, which unfolded on Sunday, was recorded by a bystander and has since gone viral on social media.
The Attorney General’s office of California, under the leadership of Rob Bonta, is currently investigating the incident. The shooting occurred after approximately two dozen motorists placed 911 calls around 3:15 p.m., reporting a man walking on I-105. This major thoroughfare runs through South Los Angeles communities and connects to Los Angeles International Airport.
According to the highway patrol, the officer arrived at the scene at approximately 3:27 p.m. He initially attempted to persuade the man to leave the freeway, but his efforts were unsuccessful. To ensure the safety of everyone involved, the highway patrol stopped traffic, and the officer proceeded to approach the man. This ultimately led to a physical altercation during which the man reportedly used a stun gun on the officer.
The incident was captured in a video circulating on social media, which shows the officer entangled with the man on the pavement just before shots were fired. In the footage, the man is lying on his back and seems to be attempting to grab the officer, while the officer appears to be trying to restrain him.
During the scuffle, the officer can be seen punching the man before reaching for his service weapon. As he rises to his feet, the officer fires multiple rounds at close range, stepping back as the shots are discharged. According to the CHP, the officer opened fire in fear for his own safety after being stunned by the suspect.
Following the shooting, the man remained motionless on the ground, and the officer kept his gun pointed at him for at least a minute before the video ended. The Los Angeles County coroner’s office has yet to release the man’s identity pending notification of his next of kin.
