California Governor Gavin Newsom has appointed Laphonza Butler as the replacement for the late Senator Dianne Feinstein. Butler, the president of EMILY’s List, an organization focused on electing pro-abortion rights Democrats, will step into the role previously held by Vice President Kamala Harris. This appointment is historic, as Butler will become the second Black woman to serve as a senator from California.
Governor Newsom praised Butler’s dedication to standing up for what is right and leading with her heart and values. He expressed confidence that she will continue to break glass ceilings and fight for the people of California in Washington. Butler’s appointment also marks another significant milestone, as she will be the first openly Black lesbian to serve in Congress.
Born and raised in Magnolia, Mississippi, Butler grew up in a working-class family. After her father’s passing when she was 16, her mother became the sole provider for Butler and her two siblings. Reflecting on her upbringing, Butler shared that her family emphasized the importance of serving others.
To take on her new role in the Senate, Butler will step aside from her position at EMILY’s List. Governor Newsom’s commitment to appointing a Black woman to Feinstein’s seat has been fulfilled.
Feinstein fought for vital issues such as reproductive freedom, equal protection, and safety from gun violence during her time in Congress. Governor Newsom believes these priorities are currently under attack nationwide and trusts that Butler will continue the fight.
Although Butler’s term will only last until early January 2025, when the winner of the November 2024 election is sworn in, her appointment provides an opportunity to bring her perspective and expertise to the Senate.
In closing, Butler’s appointment as Senator is a reflection of the progress being made towards a more diverse and inclusive representation in Congress. Her unique background and experiences will contribute to shaping policies that address the needs of all Californians.
