Ryan Minor, who famously replaced Cal Ripken Jr. to end his consecutive games played streak, has passed away at the age of 49. The baseball world is mourning the loss of Minor, who made history on September 20, 1998, when he took Ripken’s place at third base after Ripken voluntarily ended his streak at 2,632 games.

Minor, born on January 5, 1974, in Canton, Ohio, was a multi-talented athlete. He excelled in both baseball and basketball during his time at Hammon High School in Oklahoma. Minor continued his athletic pursuits at the University of Oklahoma, where he became a star in both sports. He played alongside his twin brother Damon on the Sooners’ baseball team, and together they achieved great success.

In 1994, Minor played a key role in leading the Oklahoma baseball team to a College World Series championship. Despite being selected by the New York Mets in the seventh round of the MLB Draft in 1995, Minor chose to return to college for his senior year. His decision paid off when he was later chosen by the Philadelphia 76ers in the second round of the NBA Draft in 1996. Additionally, Minor was selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the 33rd round of the MLB Draft that same year.

However, it was his role as Ripken’s replacement on that fateful night in 1998 that would forever cement Minor’s name in baseball history. The pressure was immense as he stepped onto the field, filling the shoes of a legendary player. Reflecting on the moment, Minor admitted feeling nervous but grateful for the opportunity.

I was extremely nervous. I can’t say I wasn’t, Minor said. I looked at [Ripken] and said, ‘Thanks for the opportunity.’ He looked at me and said, ‘Go get ’em.’

While Minor’s career did not reach the heights of Ripken’s, his impact and contribution to the sport will always be remembered. He played for the Orioles for parts of three seasons and later had stints with the Montreal Expos and the Boston Red Sox organizations.

News of Minor’s passing has saddened the baseball community, with many players, fans, and teams expressing their condolences. He will be remembered for his brief but significant moment in baseball history and his dedication to the sport.

Minor’s legacy extends beyond his time on the field. He went on to coach at various levels, sharing his knowledge and passion for the game with future generations. Despite his athletic achievements, he remained humble and focused on supporting others in their pursuit of success.

Ryan Minor’s passing is a loss for the baseball world. His brief role in ending Ripken’s streak and his overall contributions to the sport will forever be remembered. The impact he made on and off the field is a testament to his character and passion for the game. His legacy will continue to inspire future athletes and remind us all of the power of dedication and perseverance.
