BYU Football Depth Chart Revealed: Key Takeaways from First Scrimmage

After a competitive first scrimmage, the BYU football team is refining its depth chart as it prepares for the upcoming 2023 season. With less than three weeks until their season opener against Sam Houston on September 2, the coaching staff is evaluating the performance of their players to determine the best lineup.

During the closed 105-play scrimmage, the offense showed impressive skills and emerged as the winners, according to feedback from defensive personnel. This performance provided valuable insights for the coaching staff in finalizing the depth chart.

The running back position presents an interesting competition, with four players in contention for playing time. Aidan Robbins, a transfer from UNLV, leads the group, followed by Colorado transfer Deion Smith, who is known for his outstanding speed. Freshman LJ Martin earned high praise from quarterback Kedon Slovis after his impressive performance in the scrimmage, showcasing a natural feel for the game. Senior Hinckley Folau Ropati has proven to be a reliable pass catcher and a strong runner throughout his BYU career.

At wide receiver, the depth chart is composed mainly of underclassmen. RS-sophomores Chase Roberts, Kody Epps, and RS-junior Keanu Hill are expected to contribute significantly. RS-sophomore Keelan Marion, RS-freshman Parker Kingston, and RS-senior Darius Lassiter are also part of the mix.

The battle for the second-string tight end position is intriguing, with redshirt sophomore Ethan Erickson currently holding the spot. However, JUCO transfer Ray Paulo and freshman Jackson Bowers are both formidable options vying for playing time. Additionally, Mason Fakahua and Southern Utah transfer Mata’ava Ta’ase are potential candidates for the H-Back role left vacant by Masen Wake.

BYU boasts good depth along the offensive line. The starters include junior Caleb Etienne and sophomore Weylin Lapuaho at right tackle and right guard, respectively. Senior Paul Maile could potentially secure the center spot, although RS-junior Connor Pay is also in contention. RS-sophomore Simi Moala completes the starting lineup at left tackle. The second unit consists of RS-junior Brayden Keim, RS-sophomore Jake Eichorn, Pay, senior Maile, and RS-sophomore Simi Moala.

The defensive line features junior Isaiah Bagnah and RS-senior Tyler Batty as the starting ends, along with RS-senior Jackson Cravens and RS-senior Atunaisa Mahe in the middle. RS-freshman Aisea Moa, junior John Nelson, RS-junior Caden Haws, and RS-freshman Bodie Schoonover make up the second unit.

At linebacker, RS-senior Max Tooley, RS-junior Ben Bywater, and RS-senior AJ Vongphachanh are the starters. RS-freshman Isaiah Glasker, freshman Ace Kaufusi, and RS-junior Fisher Jackson form the second unit.

The cornerback position sees RS-senior Eddie Heckard and junior Jakob Robinson as the starters, backed up by RS-junior Mory Bamba and RS-junior Jayden Dunlap.

The safety positions are still up for grabs, with RS-senior Malik Moore and RS-sophomore Talan Alfrey competing for the free safety spot. Meanwhile, RS-sophomore Micah Harper is expected to secure the strong safety position.

The battle for the kicker position remains undetermined, with RS-sophomore Will Ferrin and freshman Matthias Dunn both being evaluated. The coaching staff remains confident that they will make the right decision before the season opener.

The wide receiver and return specialist position is open and features a talented group of players, including Parker Kingston, Hinckley Folau Ropati, Keelan Marion, and Miles Davis.

As the BYU coaching staff continues to analyze the performances and make necessary adjustments, it is evident that the team is well-equipped with depth and talent across various positions. The upcoming season looks promising, and fans are eagerly anticipating the kickoff on September 2.
