BYD is set to make a significant expansion in Australia with the launch of four new vehicles in 2024. EVDirect, the local distributor for BYD, has revealed plans to introduce the Dolphin, Seal, and Atto 3 models in addition to the highly anticipated Seal U in the second quarter of the year. The Seal U, a plug-in hybrid SUV, has already been spotted testing in Australia. Furthermore, EVDirect has hinted at the release of three more vehicles before the end of 2024. Although details on these models remain scarce, BYD has recently confirmed the launch of the Seal U and an unnamed ute in New Zealand, alongside the Sea Lion 07 and another model. EVDirect has also announced the Dolphin Sport, a new variant of the existing Dolphin hatchback. With the introduction of these new vehicles, BYD aims to solidify its position as one of the leading automotive brands and expand its presence in the Australian market.

The Seal U, which is set to arrive in Australia later this year, is expected to be a popular choice among consumers due to its plug-in hybrid powertrain and versatile SUV design. The vehicle, based on BYD’s e-platform 3.0 EV architecture, incorporates Cell-to-Body (CTB) technology, ensuring enhanced rigidity and safety by integrating the Blade battery into the vehicle structure. The Sea Lion 07, another exciting addition to BYD’s lineup, is a mid-sized electric SUV that will serve as a direct competitor to the Tesla Model Y.

EVDirect has previously announced its intention to launch at least two new vehicles each year starting from 2024, with the goal of becoming a top-five brand by 2025. After establishing itself as an electric-only brand in Australia in 2022, BYD plans to introduce plug-in hybrid models in addition to its electric offerings. BYD is globally recognized for its electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles and ceased production of purely combustion-powered vehicles in 2022.

While specifics about the upcoming ute are yet to be announced, reports suggest that it will feature a plug-in hybrid powertrain with a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine and two electric motors, delivering a total system output of 365 kW. An electric version of the ute is also under development. The Dolphin Sport, on the other hand, is a new variant of the existing Dolphin hatchback. It promises a more aggressive look and a speedy acceleration, with a 0-100km/h time under 7.0 seconds.

With BYD’s expansion plans and the introduction of these exciting new models, the brand aims to offer a wider range of vehicles to cater to the diverse needs and preferences of Australian consumers. BYD’s commitment to electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles aligns with the growing demand for sustainable transportation and reinforces its position as an innovative and forward-thinking automaker. As BYD continues to make waves in the automotive industry globally, Australian consumers can look forward to an expanded lineup of high-quality, eco-friendly vehicles in the coming years.
