Local Businessman Robbed of $5.5M in Local Currency and $800 in Corentyne

A Corentyne businessman fell victim to a brazen robbery on Thursday afternoon, losing $5.5 million in local currency and $800 in US dollars. The incident took place outside the businessman’s home and lasted a mere 40 seconds, leaving him shocked and helpless.

The victim, Makarrak Singh, is the owner of Karran and Son General Store in Bush Lot village, Corentyne, Region Six. Singh recounted that he had conducted some business off the premises earlier in the day, collecting $4 million before returning to his store. He closed up shop shortly thereafter and started making his way home.

As Singh approached the entrance to his yard, he suddenly heard the sound of screeching tires, immediately putting him on alert. When he opened the driver’s door and moved to the other side of his lorry, he noticed a motorcycle pulling up alongside him. The pillion rider, swiftly and unnoticed, made his way to the driver’s door using the back of the vehicle as a cover.

To Singh’s dismay, he found himself face-to-face with an armed man who demanded to know if he possessed a firearm. Singh responded truthfully, informing the robber that he did not have a gun. The assailant then proceeded to search Singh’s pockets, likely looking for a weapon.

I searched to see if I had a gun, and then when I looked into the front passenger seat, I saw the bag. He opened the door, took the bag, discovered the money, and made his escape on the back of the waiting motorcycle, Singh shared.

Singh expressed his feeling of helplessness, recounting that he had applied for a firearm license on three separate occasions. Unfortunately, his most recent application is still pending, leaving him vulnerable and defenseless in moments like these.

Crimes of this nature not only traumatize the victims directly involved but also instill fear within the community. Swift action by law enforcement is crucial in order to investigate this robbery and bring the perpetrators to justice.

In recent years, there have been growing concerns regarding the security and safety of businesses and residents in Corentyne. More efficient measures and increased police presence should be implemented to curb the rise in criminal activities in the region.

Singh’s ordeal highlights the urgent need for tighter security protocols, as well as the importance of properly addressing firearm license applications to allow law-abiding citizens to protect themselves and their livelihoods. The business community and residents of Corentyne deserve to feel secure and protected in their own homes and establishments.

Authorities must prioritize investigating this incident, ensuring that the culprits are apprehended and face the full force of the law. The swift resolution of this case will not only provide justice for the victim but will also serve as a deterrent for potential criminals.

As Corentyne faces a rise in criminal activities, it is imperative for the community, law enforcement agencies, and relevant stakeholders to work hand-in-hand to create a safer environment where both businesses and residents can thrive without fear of losing their hard-earned assets to opportunistic criminals.
