Burundi to Host 8th EAC University Students’ Debate on Regional Integration

Burundi is set to host the 8th East African Community (EAC) university students’ debate on regional integration on October 18-19 in the capital city of Bujumbura, according to a statement released by the EAC on Friday. The objective of the debate, which will revolve around the theme of EAC integration, peacebuilding, and youth participation, is to encourage greater involvement of young people in the EAC integration agenda and processes.

The debates and subsequent sensitization activities aim to create an inclusive environment that enables students and youth to actively participate in the integration process, while also providing them with opportunities to learn more about the benefits, challenges, and opportunities associated with EAC integration, the statement said.

Representatives from academia, the private sector, civil society, media, technocrats from the East African region, development partners, and other relevant stakeholders are expected to come together for the event. The debate is expected to be a platform where diverse perspectives can be shared and discussed, fostering a balanced view on the topic of regional integration.

In recognition of their outstanding contributions, the best debaters will be appointed, trained, and inducted as EAC Youth Ambassadors for the term 2023-2024. As Youth Ambassadors, they will play a pivotal role in spearheading peer learning, sensitization, and outreach programs within their respective universities and communities.

This year’s edition of the EAC university students’ debate can serve as a catalyst for deeper regional integration as it brings together young minds from diverse backgrounds who will contribute fresh ideas and perspectives on the subject. Their active involvement in shaping the integration process will undoubtedly pave the way for a more prosperous and united East Africa.

The EAC, established in 2000, is an intergovernmental organization that promotes regional cooperation and integration among its member states, which include Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda. Through initiatives like the university students’ debate, the EAC strives to foster a sense of belonging, inclusivity, and shared responsibility among the youth, ultimately strengthening the regional integration process.

In conclusion, the 8th EAC university students’ debate on regional integration, hosted by Burundi, is set to provide a platform for young individuals to actively engage with the EAC integration agenda. By encouraging youth participation, the debate aims to create an enabling environment for learning, dialogue, and collaboration. With diverse stakeholders coming together, this event presents a unique opportunity to nurture a cohesive and prosperous East Africa.
