Buhler High School in Reno County, Kansas, is taking proactive measures to address the shortage of referees in youth and high school sports. With the start of the high school football season, the shortage of referees has become more evident, affecting games at all levels. However, Buhler High School stands out by offering a sports officiating class to its students, aimed at training and preparing them to become referees and fill the void in the future.

Buhler High School has a group of teachers and administrators who not only educate but also serve as referees and officials during games. This commitment to sports officiating is a testament to their dedication to both education and extracurricular activities. Currently, five Buhler educators work as a football crew each week, forming strong bonds and camaraderie. According to history teacher and referee Jeff Comer, Buhler is a place where teachers genuinely care about students and sports, making it an ideal environment for this initiative.

Justin Seuser, the athletic director at Buhler, is a former high school referee who now schedules small college officials. He believes that being involved in officiating is equally valuable for educators as it is for students. It is a way for them to give back to the students in their programs and reinforces the educational aspect outside of the classroom.

Recognizing the potential of students as future referees, Brennan Torgerson, a teacher and the girl’s golf head coach at Buhler, recently started teaching a sports officiating class. The goal is to expose students to the responsibilities and challenges of officiating while teaching them valuable life lessons such as punctuality and building relationships. The class follows the Ref Reps curriculum recommended by the Kansas State High Schools Activities Association. With 16 students currently enrolled and 20 more pre-enrolled for next semester, the course has received positive interest and support.

The efforts of Buhler High School are being noticed statewide. Scott Goodheart, the head of officiating at the Kansas State High Schools Activities Association, highlights that about two dozen schools across Kansas are implementing the Ref Reps program. Buhler serves as a leading example, demonstrating their commitment to addressing the referee shortage.

To further support the sports officiating class, Torgerson appeals to retired referees and officials in the state to consider donating their old or unused gear. Outfitting a referee costs $150, so any contributions would be greatly appreciated. Those interested in donating can contact Mr. Torgerson at Buhler High School.

In conclusion, Buhler High School in Kansas is taking a proactive approach to combat the shortage of referees by offering a sports officiating class. Teachers and administrators at Buhler are not only educators but also actively involved as referees and officials. With their commitment and the introduction of the sports officiating class, Buhler is preparing students to fill the void of referees in the future. The initiative has received positive support and recognition, positioning Buhler as a leading example in the state.
