Browns Undrafted Rookies Make 53-Man Roster, But There’s No Time to Celebrate

In a surprising turn of events, undrafted rookies Ronnie Hickman and Mohamoud Diabate have secured spots on the Cleveland Browns’ initial 53-man roster. However, their journey is far from over, and they understand that there is no time to bask in their accomplishment. For these rookies, the rent is due every day, and they must continue to prove themselves.

Hickman and Diabate share a mindset that allowed them to tune out the outside noise and expectations during the preseason. Their ability to focus solely on their work each day led to their impressive performances and ultimately earned them a place on the team. While making the cut is undoubtedly an achievement, both players recognize that it is only the beginning of their careers with the Browns.

Throughout the preseason, both Hickman and Diabate became fan favorites with their standout plays on the defensive end. Hickman recorded three interceptions, including two in their game against the Commanders. Despite being undrafted, he proved that he can excel in Jim Schwartz’s defensive scheme. Hickman’s inclusion adds depth to a defense that is expected to feature three-safety packages alongside Grant Delpit, Juan Thornhill, Rodney McLeod, and D’Anthony Bell.

Hickman received the call confirming his spot on the roster while lying in bed around 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday. Although he felt anxious, he knew he had done everything he could and that the decision was no longer in his hands.

Diabate also received a call from Browns GM Andrew Berry around the same time, filled with pride and excitement for the rookie’s accomplishment. Diabate’s outstanding performance against the Eagles, where he led the team with seven tackles, further solidified his place on the roster. Standing at 6-foot-4 and 225 pounds, his size and versatility make him an asset for the Browns.

Both players share a passion for special teams, which played a significant role in their selection. Hickman acknowledged that special teams were the most critical aspect of his campaign, emphasizing the importance of making plays whenever on the field to earn the trust of coaches and teammates.

As the season opener against the Cincinnati Bengals approaches, Hickman and Diabate remain focused on their daily improvement. They have learned to take each day as it comes, acknowledging that a seven-month season can be mentally taxing. By concentrating on one day at a time, they aim to continuously enhance their skills and make a lasting impact.

For these undrafted rookies turned roster members, there is no time for celebration. The demands of their profession require them to prove themselves day in and day out. As they embark on their journey with the Cleveland Browns, Hickman and Diabate are determined to seize the opportunity and showcase their abilities to the world.
