Wrestlers in Bout: New Attraction of Mysuru – Star of Mysore

Mysuru, a city known for its traditional wrestling (kusti), is set to unveil a new attraction that pays tribute to the sport’s rich history. A 16-feet tall bronze statue depicting wrestlers in action has been installed near Basavanagudi Park in Hebbal, Ward No.4. The statue serves as a mark of respect for the wrestlers and their masters who have passed on their knowledge throughout the years. Wrestling has deep roots in Mysuru and has been a prominent sport since ancient times, even finding mention in epics like the Ramayana and Mahabharata.

Former Corporator Pailwan Srinivas, himself a wrestler, spearheaded the initiative to bring this statue to life. Utilizing a fund of Rs.37 lakh from the Mysuru City Corporation, Srinivas turned his long-cherished dream into reality. The statue stands 16-feet tall from the ground level, with an eight-feet wrestling arena forming the pedestal. The main part of the statue showcases a captivating bout between two wrestlers, adding to the visual appeal of the park.

Renowned city-based artist Anil brought the design to life after careful consideration of numerous wrestling photos. Srinivas, the driving force behind the project, expressed his delight, saying, It was my long cherished dream to build a statue for wrestlers, if voted by the people. Before proceeding with the plan, I toured several parts of North Karnataka (which is also known for wrestling), but found only two statues of smaller size. Hence this statue can be called the biggest and first in the state.

Each wrestler replica in the statue weighs a staggering 400 kg and has been securely installed to withstand rain and gale. Iron grills have been placed around the statue for added safety. Colorful lights have also been installed, enhancing its allure during the night. The statue is expected to stand out amidst the park’s greenery, emitting a multitude of light rays.

To provide visitors with a deeper understanding of wrestling’s significance, a plaque with information in Kannada has been placed on the left side of the statue. It highlights the sport’s ancient origins, its inclusion in the Olympics, and its place of honor during the Dasara festival. The plaque also emphasizes the unique respect and bond between a wrestler and their guru (master), which is unlike any other sport.

This mesmerizing statue is set to become the main attraction of Hebbal, following the famous Welcome Arch that greets visitors with the slogan Hebbalina Hebbagilu (Big door of Hebbal). Basavanagudi Park, home to the statue, is already a favorite destination for morning walkers, boasting a Yoga Mantapa, heritage lamp posts, and the bust of the previous pontiff of Adichunchanagiri Mutt, Sri Balagangadharanatha Swamiji.

Srinivas passionately affirms the need for wrestling to continue thriving in Mysuru, stating, The red mud is considered healthy and also helps in keeping certain skin infections at bay. Children nowadays are spending a lot of time only in studies and some other activities. If they develop a passion for sports along with studies, they will be physically and mentally strong. The statue of wrestlers has been installed so that the younger generation will remember this traditional sport as every house had a wrestler some years ago.

Srinivas himself was initiated into wrestling at the age of 16 and has since participated in Nada Kusti and state-level tournaments. He hopes to see an increase in Garadi Manes (wrestling training centers) and more people taking an interest in learning this traditional art that was once patronized by the Wadiyars (royal family).

The installation of this magnificent statue not only pays homage to Mysuru’s wrestling heritage but also serves as a reminder of the sport’s timeless appeal. Visitors to Hebbal will now have the opportunity to witness the skill, strength, and cultural significance of wrestling encapsulated in this remarkable piece of art.
