LONDON – British poet, musician, and actor Benjamin Zephaniah died at the age of 65 after a battle with a brain tumor, his family announced on Thursday. Zephaniah, known for his fight against racism and social injustice, used his poetry, often accompanied by dub reggae music, to break down barriers and make the art form accessible to all. Born in Birmingham, England, Zephaniah spoke out against racial abuse and educational inequality throughout his life, despite being diagnosed with dyslexia and leaving school at a young age. His achievements were a testament to his determination and passion.

It is with great sadness and regret that we announce the death of our beloved husband, son, and brother in the early hours of this morning, the 7th December 2023, the statement read. We shared him with the world, and we know many will be shocked and saddened by this news.
From a young age, Zephaniah found solace and inspiration in his ability to write. A gift of a manual typewriter during his childhood sparked his love for literature, a passion that would shape his career. Despite his struggles with dyslexia, Zephaniah went on to become a prominent figure in the world of poetry, challenging traditional notions of the art form.
Moving to London at the age of 22, Zephaniah became involved in the race protests of the 1980s and dedicated himself to changing the perception of poetry as an elite pursuit. In 1983, his first poetry collection, Pen Rhythm, was published, marking the beginning of his influential career. Zephaniah’s work extended to writing poetry for children, with his book Talking Turkeys earning widespread popularity.
In addition to his writing, Zephaniah was also a talented musician and performer. He formed the Benjamin Zephaniah Band and released the album Rasta in 1982, featuring the first recording of The Wailers since Bob Marley’s passing. Zephaniah’s music often carried powerful political messages, including a tribute to Nelson Mandela during his imprisonment.
Throughout his life, Zephaniah used his platform to shed light on the struggles faced by Black British people. His poetry collection Too Black, Too Strong, released in 2001, delved into these experiences. A year later, he published We Are Britain!, a collection celebrating the cultural diversity of the country.
Zephaniah’s impact extended beyond his artistic endeavors. As an actor, he appeared in the popular British period drama Peaky Blinders, set in his hometown of Birmingham. His presence in the show further cemented his cultural significance and reach.
