British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak calls on voters and his own Conservative Party to stay committed to the plan for long-term change as he prepares for an upcoming election, most likely in the second half of this year. Sunak, who took office in late 2022, highlighted the progress he has overseen so far, including efforts to address taxation, reduce health service waiting lists, and control migrant arrivals. Despite facing challenges in fulfilling his main pledges and leading a divided party, Sunak remains determined to deliver on his promises.

In an interview with the BBC’s Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg program, Sunak emphasized the need to persevere with the plan in order to secure a better future for the country and its citizens. While acknowledging that more work needs to be done, he expressed optimism about the direction the country is heading in. Sunak’s hopes for a turnaround in the polls largely depend on his ability to focus on his agenda and gain more support.

However, the prime minister faces significant hurdles. He has struggled to make substantial progress on his key promises, and his party is plagued by internal divisions, with some lawmakers threatening to remove him from his position unless he implements further tax cuts. Sunak did manage to achieve one target of halving inflation by the end of 2023, although economists argue government policies played a minimal role in this accomplishment.

Sunak also faced criticism over his plan to relocate asylum seekers to Rwanda, which he believes he can push through parliament. He emphasized the importance of controlling spending, particularly in welfare benefits, and expressed concern over the number of individuals deemed unable to work. Opposition party Labour accused Sunak of prolonging his stay in office and urged him to set a date for the election, expressing skepticism that he prioritizes the country’s interests over his own ambitions.

Labour leader Keir Starmer voiced his concerns, suggesting that Sunak’s delay in calling for an election may be motivated by a desire to reach the two-year mark of his premiership. Starmer called on Sunak to either announce his plan or proceed with the election swiftly. Despite the challenges and criticisms, Sunak remains determined to see his agenda through, and the upcoming election will provide an opportunity to gauge public support for his vision.

As the prime minister prepares for the election, he emphasizes the importance of sticking to the plan for long-term change. Sunak’s appeal goes out to both voters and his own party, calling for unity and commitment to achieving the goals he has set. The effectiveness of his message and the impact of his agenda on the electorate will become clearer as the election date approaches. In the meantime, Sunak will continue to work towards his vision of a better future for the country.
