Conservative Lawmaker to Quit Parliament After Death Threats and Arson Attack

A UK lawmaker has announced his decision to step down from Parliament due to ongoing abuse and death threats linked to his support for Israel. Mike Freer, who represents the London constituency of Finchley and Golders Green, has been subjected to a series of menacing incidents, including an arson attack on his office in December.

Freer revealed that the attack was the final straw that prompted his decision. Speaking to the BBC, he expressed his concern for the safety of his family, stating that while politicians expect some degree of criticism, the level of abuse he has faced is unfair and crosses a line.

The lawmaker disclosed that he has received death threats from a group called Muslims Against Crusades. In response to these threats, Freer began wearing a stab-proof vest after discovering that Ali Harbi Ali, a supporter of the Islamic State group, had been monitoring his office. Ali had previously stabbed Conservative lawmaker David Amess to death in 2021.

Tragically, Amess was the second British lawmaker to be murdered in the past decade. In 2016, Labour legislator Jo Cox was killed by a far-right attacker. These incidents highlight the growing concern surrounding the safety and security of politicians in the UK.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s spokesperson, Max Blain, condemned the abuse and threats directed at Freer, emphasizing that they represent an attack on British democracy. House of Commons Speaker Lindsay Hoyle echoed this sentiment, urging lawmakers to lead by example and promote a more respectful and civil approach to political debates.

Two individuals appeared in court on Thursday in connection with the arson attack on Freer’s office. They are scheduled to stand trial later this year. Authorities have stated that they are not treating the incident as a hate crime.

The decision of Mike Freer to leave Parliament raises important questions about the safety of politicians and the need for increased measures to combat abuse and protect public servants. As the political landscape continues to evolve, it is essential that steps are taken to safeguard those who dedicate themselves to public service.
