The British High Commission and the British Council recently organized a special event in New Delhi to celebrate Pride Month and honor the LGBT+ community worldwide. The event saw the participation of members of the LGBT+ community in the city, supporters from different parts of the country, as well as grassroots champions such as InsideOut Delhi and the Humsafar Trust.
The celebration involved an art exhibition by the British queer artist Howard Hodgkin, who worked with the Indian architect Charles Correa to design the iconic black and white mural that adorns the front of the British Council building. Similar events are being organized across India, including receptions planned at Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Ahemdabad, Chennai, and Jodhpur.
The UK is committed to championing LGBT+ rights globally, and ensuring that everyone, everywhere is protected against discrimination. Christina Scott, Acting British High Commissioner to India, expressed pride in celebrating the LGBT+ community with like-minded people across the city. She believes that everyone deserves the freedom to love whom they choose and express themselves without the fear of facing discrimination.
Michael Houlgate, Deputy Director, British Council India, reiterates their commitment to diversity and inclusion, reflecting in their celebration of Pride Month and supporting the LGBTQIA+ community through their work in English, education, and the arts.
The event was a tribute to everyone working towards achieving full, equal, and meaningful participation for individuals across all walks of life. The organizers emphasized creating empowering platforms for the LGBTQIA+ community to express themselves authentically and stand in support of love and equality.
The British High Commission has marked its support for the LGBT+ community through similar events worldwide. The UK will always strive to support and advocate for the rights of the LGBT+ community globally, as part of its commitment towards creating a safer and more inclusive world.
