Brexit Trade Talks Collapse: UK and Canada Disagree on Beef and Cheese

Britain’s post-Brexit trade talks with Canada have broken down, as the two countries are unable to reach an agreement on the import and export of beef and cheese. The negotiations have been ongoing for the past two years since Britain left the European Union, with trade between the two nations continuing under the existing deal.

The disagreement stems from the Canadian beef industry’s desire for access to the UK market for its hormone-fed beef, while domestic cheesemakers expressed concerns about the economic impact of tariff-free cheese imports from Britain, particularly cheddar. Tariff-free cheese exports from Britain to Canada expired at the end of 2023, resulting in British producers facing higher duties of 245%.

Following the breakdown in talks, the UK government stated that it is open to restarting discussions in the future but acknowledged the lack of progress thus far. Annual trade between the two countries is estimated to be worth around 26 billion pounds ($33 billion).

Canadian Trade Minister Mary Ng emphasized that any deal must be beneficial for Canadian workers, farmers, and businesses. Meanwhile, Minette Batters, president of the National Farmers’ Union of England and Wales, commended the British government for standing firm against allowing hormone-linked beef into the country.

Since Brexit, the UK’s ability to pursue independent trade policies was extolled as a significant advantage. However, progress in securing new trade deals has been limited, with the benefits often outweighed by the trade barriers that now exist between Britain and the EU. Prior to Brexit, Britain enjoyed unrestricted trade within the bloc.

The Conservative government downplayed the breakdown in trade talks with Canada, emphasizing the benefit of negotiating deals that work in the UK’s interests. The government expressed willingness to restart negotiations with Canada but did not provide a timeline for when this might occur.

Concerns have now been raised that British car exports could face higher tariffs from April, as another temporary tariff-free agreement, similar to the one involving cheese, is set to expire.

The British Chambers of Commerce described the breakdown in talks as unwelcome news and called on the government to support industries affected by the loss of trade preferences. The opposition Labour Party criticized the government, perceiving the collapse of the talks as another failure to fulfill its promises following Brexit.

As negotiations stall, attention turns to the potential implications for various sectors, including the automotive and manufacturing industries, as well as dairy exporters. The absence of a trade deal with Canada underscores the challenges Britain faces in establishing new partnerships in a post-Brexit landscape.

In conclusion, Britain’s trade talks with Canada have reached an impasse as differences over beef and cheese continue to stymie negotiations. The breakdown in discussions highlights the complexities of forging new trade relationships in the wake of Brexit, with key industries fearing the loss of trade preferences and potential disruptions to their operations. The UK government remains open to restarting talks but is yet to set a schedule for such future negotiations.
