In North Dakota, breast cancer remains the most commonly diagnosed cancer, and it ranks as the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women. To combat this alarming trend, doctors strongly advise patients to undergo regular screenings, specifically mammograms, which provide vital x-ray images of the breasts. However, the internet has been flooded with rumors claiming that mammograms are detrimental to one’s health due to the radiation involved. To address these concerns, KX News reached out to Dr. Christina Tello, a diagnostic radiologist at Sanford Health in Bismarck.

Dr. Tello has encountered numerous pseudo-articles online, suggesting that a single mammogram is equivalent to receiving 1,000 chest x-rays—an alarming claim that has caused some individuals to forgo mammograms altogether and explore alternative methods like thermography. However, medical professionals maintain that mammograms remain the most effective way to detect breast cancer early on, and they emphasize the unreliability of online information.

Contrary to the rumors circulating online, Dr. Tello asserts that the radiation exposure from a mammogram is relatively low. She explains, It’s about the same as three chest x-rays. That’s the same as just getting two months of background radiation from just living on Earth. We get a lot of radiation, you know, from space. So, it’s a very low dose. Our machines get better every year. So, the dose continues to decrease, and it’s really not harmful. She emphasizes that advancements in technology have resulted in improved mammogram machines with lower doses of radiation, debunking the misinformation.

Mammograms are particularly effective in detecting cancers hidden beneath the surface, such as those occurring in women with dense breast tissue. Early detection significantly enhances treatment outcomes, making mammograms an essential screening tool. Penny Skjerseth, a breast cancer survivor, attests to the importance of mammograms despite any temporary discomfort. She shares her journey, stating, Never be afraid that you’re going to be hurting, or bruised, or anything like that. It goes away very quickly. It was well worth it. Well worth it. Then, they did an ultrasound and it’s all history now. And I’ve been a cancer survivor since 2011. From the day you’re diagnosed and I had the radiation and that in February and been good ever since.

Patients with a family history of breast cancer are at a higher risk of developing the disease themselves. Consequently, doctors strongly recommend that individuals in this category undergo annual mammograms starting at the age at which their affected relative was diagnosed. By adhering to this guideline, individuals can proactively monitor their health and potentially detect breast cancer at its earliest stages.

While misinformation may persist online, it is crucial for individuals to rely on reputable medical advice. Mammograms remain the gold standard for breast cancer screening due to their reliable and accurate detection capabilities. The temporary discomfort experienced during the procedure is far outweighed by the potential benefits of catching cancer early and increasing the chances of successful treatment. By dispelling these harmful rumors, healthcare professionals aim to ensure that individuals can make informed decisions regarding their breast health. Remember, relying on accurate and trustworthy sources rather than online speculation is key when it comes to safeguarding your well-being.
