**Title: Nipah Outbreak Update: Kerala Confirms First Index Case and Expects More Positive Cases**

In a significant breakthrough, Kerala’s health department has successfully identified the index case of the Nipah virus outbreak in the state. Muhammad Ali, who tragically passed away on August 30, has been confirmed as the source of infection from which five others contracted the virus. This confirmation marks a rare achievement for the health officials.

The previous Nipah outbreak in Kozhikode in 2018 lacked a sample for testing the index case, Muhammad Sabith. However, the health department managed to preserve the throat swab of Muhammad Ali, which was collected for H1N1 examination. Despite waiting for the test results, the symptoms strongly indicated Nipah as the cause of his illness.

Dr. Anoop Kumar A S, a critical care specialist in Kozhikode, expressed confidence in curbing the spread of the infection by evaluating the virus’s current trajectory. He speculates that there may be an additional three or four Nipah-positive cases. The health officials will closely monitor the situation until September 20 to 25 to determine whether secondary cases will contribute to a further spread of the virus.

Amid the recent developments, it is important for the public to remain calm. The district collector of Kochi, N S K Umesh, reassured citizens by stating there is currently no cause for concern. Although a few individuals have been admitted to the isolation ward in Ernakulam Medical College due to exhibiting symptoms, it is merely a precautionary measure. The district health system is fully prepared to handle any situation, with all necessary precautions taken.

Meanwhile, a university in Madhya Pradesh has revoked its order mandating a Nipah negative certificate for students from Kerala. The intervention by Kerala’s state government emphasized that Nipah has only been reported in Kozhikode, and no students from the district are enrolled at the university.

To facilitate consultations and reduce the strain on hospitals, the health department has launched a telemedicine OP (online portal). This service enables individuals experiencing Nipah symptoms to consult with doctors without physically visiting a hospital. The e-Sanjeevani Nipah OPD services are available daily from 8 am to 5 pm.

In conclusion, Kerala’s confirmation of the index case in the Nipah outbreak represents a significant breakthrough in the fight against the virus. The health officials, armed with this valuable information, are optimistic about curbing the infection’s spread. While additional cases are expected, the public is urged not to panic. The district health system remains vigilant and well-equipped to tackle any situation.
