Seventy breakdancers from small towns in Madhya Pradesh, India, are training with B-Boy Kareem, one of the most celebrated breakdancers in the United States, and B-Boy Flying Machine, India’s best performer, to improve their chances of making the Olympics. Breakdancing was recently included as a sport by the International Olympic Committee for the Paris Olympics, and the Directorate of Sports and Youth Welfare in Madhya Pradesh has included it in the state sports academy.

For many of these breakdancers, this is their first time receiving professional training. Lalita, a farmer’s daughter, said she learned breakdancing on her own, while Kavya Shrivastava said she comes from a town where nobody knows about B-boying. However, these dancers have now come together to pursue their dreams of performing at the Olympics.

However, some of the breakdancers have faced resistance, particularly due to religious and cultural beliefs. Sheikh Sameer said that some people considered his dance clothing inappropriate, while in his religion, dance is considered forbidden. But for many, breakdancing is a talent worth showcasing.

B-Boy Kareem praised the establishment of the government-run breakdancing academy, calling it a one-of-a-kind initiative. He believed that if other Indian states started taking breakdancing seriously, Indian dancers could qualify for events like the Olympics. Meanwhile, B-Boy Flying Machine acknowledged that while Madhya Pradesh has made considerable progress, other states need to follow suit. He lamented the lack of funding that has hampered his ability to take part in international events.

The story of these Madhya Pradesh breakdancers is one of perseverance against the odds. However, they demonstrate that training and determination can overcome even the greatest obstacles. With the help of their coaches, they are determined to showcase breakdancing as much more than just a street art.
