Boxing Legend Tony Webster Passes Away at 86

Norwich is mourning the loss of beloved boxing champion Tony Webster, who recently passed away at the age of 86. Tony, known for his incredible skill and the respect he garnered from the boxing community, had a remarkable career that spanned decades.

Tony’s legacy extends beyond the ring, as he was a figurehead at the world-famous Lads Club. He had a deep connection to the club, which saw three generations of his family follow in his footsteps. His son, Paul, and grandson, Kristian, both pursued boxing careers, clearly inspired by Tony’s success.

Born and raised in Norwich, Tony attended the Norman School, where he developed a love for sports, particularly boxing. He found his place at the Lads Club, where he began as a bantamweight and later moved up to the featherweight division before serving in the National Service.

During his time in the Army, Tony joined the Royal Army Ordnance Corps boxing team and served as a physical training instructor in Singapore. His exceptional boxing style and prowess gained him a large following. Tony became a district champion and even won a medal at the 1955 South East Asia Games, earning a reputation as one of the most promising amateurs of his time.

Upon returning to Norwich, Tony’s achievements were celebrated with the presentation of his county colors to his mother. His professional boxing career took off, with some of his bouts being televised. Freddie King, a renowned promoter, ensured Tony’s fights always drew in substantial crowds across the country.

The Webster boxing legacy continued with Tony’s son, Paul, who followed in his father’s footsteps at the Lads Club. Paul achieved great success, winning a junior ABA championship in the Eastern Counties. Now, Tony’s grandson, 19-year-old Kristian, carries on the family’s boxing tradition as a member of the Lads Club.

Tony is survived by his loving wife, Pauline, with whom he shared 64 years of marriage. He is also survived by his son Paul, daughter Gina, grandchildren Ryan, Danielle, Luke, Kristian, and Ethan, as well as great-grandchildren Neve and Bella.

Friends, family, and fans will gather to bid farewell to Tony at his funeral, which will take place at St Faiths Crematorium on Friday, August 4 at 2:30 pm. The gathering will be held at St Faiths Centre following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Lads Club in Tony’s memory. The funds will be used to purchase new equipment for the club, which has produced numerous talented boxers over the last century.

Tony Webster’s impact as a boxing legend and his involvement with the Lads Club will forever be remembered by the Norwich community. His skills in the ring, as well as his dedication to the sport, have left an indelible mark on both the past and present generations of boxing enthusiasts.
