Boston on High Alert as Rabies Outbreak Persists: Fifth Rabid Raccoon Unearthed
In a concerning turn of events, animal control officers have issued a warning to Boston residents and pet owners regarding a rabies outbreak that has struck the city. This cautionary measure comes on the heels of the discovery of a fifth rabid raccoon within Boston’s limits.
The latest infected raccoon was found in the vicinity of Hillside Avenue in Mission Hill just last week. Prior to this, three other raccoons carrying the virus were apprehended in Jamaica Plain, with an additional one captured in Roslindale.
Rabies is a highly contagious disease that can be transmitted to humans through direct contact with the saliva of an infected animal, typically through a bite or scratch. Thankfully, no reports of human rabies have emerged thus far in relation to the raccoon sightings.
To ensure public safety, Boston Animal Control officials have advised residents to exercise caution around wildlife displaying unusual behavior. Additionally, it is crucial to closely supervise pets while they are outdoors and seek immediate medical assistance if either humans or animals sustain a bite or scratch from a wild creature. Moreover, residents are strongly urged to refrain from touching or feeding wild animals.
Taking proactive measures to combat the spread of rabies, two free vaccination clinics for pets have been scheduled for the coming month. The first clinic will be held at the BCYF Curtis Hall Community Center on September 16, running from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Similarly, the BCYF Tobin Community Center will host the second clinic on September 30, also from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
