Boeing has come under intense criticism since a door plug panel tore off a new Alaska Airlines 737 MAX 9 jet at 16,000 feet. In the aftermath of the incident, the FAA grounded the MAX 9 for several weeks, barred Boeing from increasing the MAX production rate, and ordered it to develop a comprehensive plan to address systemic quality-control issues within 90 days. The new head of Boeing’s troubled commercial airplane unit said the planemaker faces a pivotal moment as it works to boost quality and address significant concerns from regulators and airline customers after a panel flew off a 737 MAX 9 jet in January.

This is a pivotal moment for us, and we have serious work ahead to build trust and improve our operations, said Stephanie Pope, who was named president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes on Monday. Pope emphasized the importance of prioritizing safety and quality to meet and exceed the expectations of regulators, customers, and the flying public. She plans to engage with the team in enhancing and implementing a safety and quality improvement plan in the coming weeks.

The developments come amid leadership changes at Boeing, with CEO Dave Calhoun announcing his departure by the end of the year. Stan Deal, the long-time head of commercial airplanes, retired effectively immediately. The board chair Larry Kellner also stepped down, replaced by director Steve Mollenkopf. GE CEO Larry Culp, a potential replacement for Calhoun, emphasized the critical need for strong leadership qualities during these challenging times for Boeing.

The FAA has set milestones for Boeing to meet in collaboration with the agency by the end of March. As the planemaker navigates through turbulent times, the focus remains on long-term product and corporate strategy to overcome present challenges. Boeing must address quality control issues, regain trust, and ensure safety remains a top priority to move forward successfully.
