BMW is all set to introduce an affordable electric SUV, the iX1, in New Zealand. The model is expected to be priced below $80,000, making it eligible for the Clean Car Discount threshold. The iX1 eDrive20, the second electric model in the X1 family, will come equipped with a single front-mounted electric motor that can generate 150kW of power and 271Nm of torque. With a 64.7kWh battery, the car will have a WLTP-rated range of up to 470km and can support DC charge rates of up to 130kW.

The iX1 eDrive20 will sport BMW’s latest interior features, including a 10.25-inch information display and a 10.7-inch infotainment screen. The design will incorporate a common glass surface that curves towards the driver, adding a touch of elegance to the overall look.

While the final specifications and price are yet to be confirmed, BMW has expressed its interest in offering a sub-$80k model, making electric vehicles more accessible to a wider range of consumers. This wouldn’t be BMW’s first electric vehicle priced below $80,000, as the brand previously offered the quirky i3 hatchback for $74,300 several years ago, before phasing it out.

In the past, supply issues and New Zealand’s preference for high-spec models hindered the availability of affordable BMW electric vehicles. However, if the new iX1 can meet the Clean Car limit, it is expected to see increased sales in the country. This latest addition to BMW’s electric vehicle lineup will also contribute to the brand’s goal of increasing its electric vehicle sales. Currently, one out of every five BMW vehicles sold worldwide is powered by electricity. The iX1 eDrive20 is scheduled to arrive in local showrooms in early 2024.

With the introduction of the iX1 eDrive20, BMW aims to cater to the demand for affordable electric SUVs while further expanding its presence in the electric vehicle market. As more consumers are becoming interested in electric vehicles, offering competitively priced models with impressive features and specifications will be crucial for automakers like BMW to remain competitive. The iX1 eDrive20’s arrival in New Zealand’s market is expected to create a positive impact, providing consumers with more options and contributing to the country’s increased adoption of electric vehicles.
