Black Men Face Higher Suicide Rates Due to Financial Pressures and Loneliness, Experts Say, South Africa

Contrary to popular belief, men – especially those in black communities – are more likely to attempt suicide due to financial pressures and difficulties, according to experts. The Gauteng MEC for Health and Wellness, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko, has expressed concern over the increasing rate of suicide attempts in the province, following over 1,500 incidents and emergency service calls on New Year’s Eve. The number of suicide attempts recorded was higher than usual, with stabbings and shootings also reaching alarming levels. Experts point out that black men face significant social and financial challenges, often lacking support structures, which makes it harder for them to cope emotionally. While these issues may be more noticeable during the holiday season, it is crucial to address them year-round. The South African Depression and Anxiety Group states that the festive season brings overwhelming feelings of defeat and depression, with more people feeling unable to cope with life’s pressures and resorting to suicide. Suicide-related deaths have risen by 54%, with the most significant increase occurring among people under 40. The rise in depression can be attributed to a combination of factors, including the loss of loved ones and the increased cost of living. It is necessary to raise awareness around prioritizing mental health and offering support to friends and loved ones throughout the year. By understanding these issues and providing appropriate civic education, communities can work towards reducing suicide rates among men, especially those in vulnerable groups.
