The Black Ferns, reigning world champions in women’s rugby, have been dealt a blow as star winger Ayesha Leti-I’iga has been ruled out for the remainder of the year due to an ACL injury. The 24-year-old sustained the injury during training and now faces a significant amount of time on the sidelines.

Leti-I’iga played a crucial role in the Black Ferns’ victorious Rugby World Cup campaign and has been a dominant force on the wing for both her national team and the Hurricanes Poua in Super Rugby Pacific. Her absence will undoubtedly be felt as the Black Ferns continue their journey through the Pacific Four Series and prepare for the inaugural WXV tournament, set to take place in New Zealand.

In recent times, there has been a concerning increase in knee injuries among female athletes. According to data collected by ACL Women Football Club, out of the 32 teams in the recent Fifa Women’s World Cup, 36 players are currently out or have recently returned from ACL injuries. This trend is not limited to football, as female athletes in various sports are two to eight times more likely to suffer ACL injuries compared to their male counterparts.

Orthopedic surgeon Mark Clatworthy, based in Auckland, has observed a significant rise in knee-stabilizing ligament injuries among female athletes over the past 15 years. He estimates that female athletes are twice as likely as male athletes to experience such injuries. Recovery from an ACL injury typically takes between nine to twelve months, depending on the severity. Therefore, there is potential for Leti-I’iga to return in time for the Super Rugby Aupiki next year.

Despite Leti-I’iga’s absence, the Black Ferns showcased their depth and talent in their recent 50-0 victory over Australia, with debutantes Katelyn Vahaakolo and Mererangi Paul impressing on the wings. Paul especially stood out by scoring two tries. However, there is no doubt that Leti-I’iga’s presence and contributions will be sorely missed as the Black Ferns aim to continue their success in the upcoming tournaments.

It is essential for athletes and sports organizations to prioritize the prevention and rehabilitation of ACL injuries. With the increasing number of cases in women’s sports, it is crucial to invest in measures that can reduce the risk of such injuries. This includes implementing training programs focused on strengthening muscles around the knee, improving landing techniques, and promoting overall knee health.

While Leti-I’iga’s injury is undoubtedly a setback for the Black Ferns, it also serves as a reminder of the challenges and risks faced by athletes. The road to recovery will be a long one, but her determination and resilience will undoubtedly play a significant role in her journey back to the field.

As sports fans, we must continue to support and celebrate the achievements of female athletes while advocating for their well-being and safety. Leti-I’iga’s absence will test the Black Ferns’ strength, but their pursuit of excellence and their commitment to the game will undoubtedly prevail.
