Communist Party of India (Marxist) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury has stated that all pillars of the Indian constitution are under attack by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) regime. During a joint press conference at the conclusion of an opposition meeting in the city of Patna, Yechury said that there was a concerted effort to change the character of the country and that opposition leaders were coming together to safeguard against divisive forces. He argued the BJP was attempting to rewrite history and destroy the secular and democratic traditions intrinsic to India’s identity. Yechury highlighted that federalism, social justice, secularism, and democratic principles were being threatened. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, host of the gathering, said that all parties had decided to fight the election together, asserting that a united front was needed to tackle the BJP in 2024 polls. Another opposition meeting is planned for next month.
