The West Bengal Bharatiya Janata Party chief, Sukanta Majumdar, lambasted the State Election Commission on Thursday for bypassing the Calcutta High Court’s order concerning the deployment of central forces in districts where panchayat polls are scheduled for July 8. Majumdar criticised the commission for flouting the court’s directive, which came in response to political violence during the filing of panchayat nominations. The Calcutta High Court ordered the deployment of Central forces in sensitive areas and emphasised that the State Election Commission is responsible for the safety of polling agents. However, the court refused to extend the time for nominations to be submitted.
