The BJP has accused the Congress party of attacking India’s civilisational values and rich legacy after senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh criticized the government’s decision to award the Gandhi Peace Prize 2021 to Gita Press, a publishing house in Uttar Pradesh. In a tweet, Ramesh compared the decision to awarding Hindutva ideologue Savarkar and Mahatma Gandhi’s assassin Nathuram Godse. Gita Press, which is celebrating its centenary this year, has published 41.7 crore books in 14 languages, including 16.21 crore Shrimad Bhagvad Gita. The Ministry of Culture said the award was given in recognition of the press’s outstanding contribution towards social, economic and political transformation through non-violent and other Gandhian methods. The award comes with a cash prize of Rs 1 crore ($135,800), a citation, a plaque, and a traditional handicraft or handloom item.
