Ludhiana: A local BJP leader, Parminder Mehta, has criticized the civic body for its lackluster approach towards addressing the concerns of the old city in Ludhiana. Mehta, a former councillor, expressed disappointment with the Municipal Corporation’s negligence towards the problems faced by the area, despite it being the hub of wholesale markets. He alleged that the apathetic attitude of officials becomes evident as soon as one crosses the Lakkar bridge from the old city to civil lines.
Mehta highlighted several issues afflicting the old city, particularly in areas housing hosiery industries and markets. He pointed out that the water supply in these regions is contaminated due to a deficient sewage system. Furthermore, Mehta claimed that no steps have been taken to ensure cleanliness in the old city, with the Municipal Corporation failing to carry out repairs of roads, streets, parking facilities, dividers, white lines, and road flashlights.
The BJP leader also drew attention to the poor sanitation conditions prevailing in the old markets. He noted that sweepers were seen burning trash in the market, a practice that is strictly prohibited. Moreover, Mehta expressed his dismay over the delayed provision of designated space to street vendors, despite government directives. He called on the Municipal Corporation officials to include the old city areas in the smart city project.
The concerns raised by Parminder Mehta shed light on the lack of attention given to the old city by the civic body. With contaminated water supply, deteriorating infrastructure, and unsatisfactory sanitation conditions, it is evident that immediate action is needed to address these issues. As the area serves as the core of wholesale markets, it is crucial for the Municipal Corporation to prioritize and rectify these problems promptly.
