The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) criticized Congress for opposing the implementation of the uniform civil code (UCC) and claimed that the party is succumbing to pressure from fundamentalists and adhering to vote-bank politics. Party national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla said that the BJP is committed towards establishing the UCC. Congress had earlier stated that the Law Commission’s decision to seek public opinion on the UCC is a part of the Narendra Modi government’s polarization agenda. In response, Poonawalla stated that the UCC is a tool of women empowerment and an important part of the Constitution. He said that the Congress has been consistently sacrificing women’s rights and issues for the sake of vote banks. Poonawalla urged Congress to support the UCC in order to promote gender equality in India.
