India’s Gujarat coast is on red alert as cyclone Biparjoy is expected to make landfall on Thursday. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued the warning for Saurashtra and Kutch coasts and Prime Minister Narendra Modi has directed officials to evacuate those in vulnerable areas. The cyclone has undergone rapid intensification twice during its lifecycle and is expected to have a sustained wind speed of 125-135 km per hour upon landfall. Two of India’s largest ports, Mundra and Kandla, and the Jamnagar refinery, the world’s biggest oil refinery complex, are based in Saurashtra. Fishing operations along Gujarat’s south and north coasts have been advised to suspend, and evacuation of coastal areas of Saurashtra and Kutch has been suggested.
