Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) organised a nationwide Biker’s rally and walkathon ahead of International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. The event was carried out across 34 locations and saw more than 3500 bikers participating. In Delhi, the bikers’ rally was flagged off and led by Delhi Zonal Team. Around 500 bikers participated in the rally from various walks of life, including private professionals and common people, with a message of yes to life, say no to drugs.
This year’s International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking holds particular significance as it aims to raise awareness about the importance of treating people who use drugs with respect and empathy. The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) recognises the importance of taking a people-centred approach to drug policies, with a focus on human rights, compassion, and evidence-based practices.
The walkathon event was conducted at India Gate in New Delhi, on the occasion. The International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, also known as World Drug Day, is celebrated on 26 June every year to strengthen action and cooperation in achieving a world free of drug abuse.
Many people who use drugs face stigma and discrimination, which can further harm their physical and mental health and prevent them from accessing the help they need. Therefore, the aim of this year’s campaign is to raise awareness about offering alternatives to punishment, prioritising prevention, and leading with compassion while treating people who use drugs with respect and empathy.
The campaign promotes combating stigma and discrimination against people who use drugs by promoting language and attitudes that are respectful and non-judgmental. As a result, the NCB organised a nationwide bikers’ rally and walkathon event to spread awareness and encourage people to say no to drugs while saying yes to life.
In conclusion, the NCB’s nationwide bikers’ rally and walkathon event have brought attention to the importance of respecting people who use drugs. These events have encouraged people to prioritise prevention and lead with compassion, resulting in a world free of drug abuse, according to the aims of International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
