CHARLESTON, South Carolina – U.S. President Joe Biden delivered a powerful denouncement of white supremacy and political violence during a visit to the historic Mother Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina on Monday. Biden, seeking to regain support from Black voters, condemned the poison of white supremacy that has plagued the nation for far too long. The church holds significance as the place where nine Black parishioners were brutally gunned down by a white supremacist in 2015.

While addressing the congregation, Biden took the opportunity to criticize his predecessor, former President Donald Trump, and his role in stoking violence and division. Biden referred to the deadly attack on the U.S. Capitol by Trump supporters in 2021, labeling it as one of the worst derelictions of duty by any president in American history. He emphasized that Trump’s refusal to accept the 2020 election results and his dissemination of false information posed a direct threat to democracy.

Biden’s visit to South Carolina comes at a crucial time as some Democrats have expressed concerns about his standing with Black voters. Representative James Clyburn, whose endorsement played a significant role in Biden’s victory in the state’s 2020 primary, voiced his frustration that the president’s achievements have not resonated enough with the Democratic base. Recent polling has also indicated that support for Biden among Black voters has softened.

Former President Barack Obama, who remains vigilant about Trump’s potential bid for the 2024 presidency, reportedly discussed Biden’s reelection campaign during a lunch meeting before Christmas.

In an effort to bolster his campaign, Biden lauded his administration’s accomplishments in reducing inflation, decreasing Black unemployment, and combating housing discrimination. He also expressed gratitude to Black voters in the South for their support in his presidential victory.

However, Biden’s speech was briefly interrupted by protesters chanting for an immediate ceasefire in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Gaza. Biden assured the audience that he was engaged in discussions with the Israeli government to deescalate the situation.

As Democrats aim to prioritize South Carolina in the primary calendar, surpassing Iowa and New Hampshire, they seek to connect with the state’s diverse population to better reflect the party’s voters. A campaign advisor revealed that the strategy includes early investments to reach voters of color and build stronger relationships in the community.

Biden’s visit to the Mother Emanuel AME Church concluded with private meetings with families and survivors of the 2015 mass shooting. The president commended the congregation for their forgiveness and resilience in the face of tragedy.

With the 2024 election on the horizon, Biden’s trip to South Carolina serves as a crucial opportunity for him to secure support from Black voters and solidify his standing within the Democratic Party. The president’s focus on combating white supremacy and political violence reflects his commitment to healing the deep-rooted divisions in the country.
