Washington, Dec 12 (EFE) – President Joe Biden has announced $200 million in aid for Ukraine during a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House. The aid is aimed at supporting Ukraine in the face of the ongoing Russian invasion. This announcement comes at a critical time, as the Republican opposition has blocked new funds for Ukraine.
The $200 million in aid is part of a previously approved budget that is close to depletion. Biden has been pushing for Congress to approve a new aid package of approximately $106 billion, with $61 billion earmarked for Ukraine and an additional $15 billion for Israel. However, his efforts have been unsuccessful so far.
During the meeting, Biden stressed the urgency of passing supplemental funding for Ukraine before Congress goes on holiday, warning that failing to do so would give Russian President Vladimir Putin a significant advantage. Biden also expressed concerns about potential attacks by Russia on Ukrainian power plants during the winter.
Zelensky, while expressing gratitude for the support shown by the United States, emphasized the need for more air defense systems to combat the ongoing conflict. He had earlier met with lawmakers on Capitol Hill, where he spoke about the importance of U.S. aid and answered questions about its usage.
However, Republican lawmakers remain skeptical about military aid for Ukraine. House Speaker Kevin Johnson reiterated his party’s demand for immigration policy reforms as a condition for approving the aid package. Johnson criticized the Biden administration for not providing sufficient oversight, strategy, or answers regarding the proposed funding.
Zelensky’s visit to Washington follows his attendance at the inauguration of Argentina’s new president and meetings with high-ranking officials, including the head of the International Monetary Fund and the Pentagon. The Ukrainian president is seeking international support to combat the Russian invasion.
The $200 million in aid from the United States is crucial for Ukraine as it continues to confront Russian aggression. The ongoing conflict has resulted in significant human suffering and economic strain for the Ukrainian people. It remains to be seen whether Congress will pass the supplemental funding before the holiday recess, as urged by President Biden.
The meeting between Biden and Zelensky underscores the importance of continued international support for Ukraine in its struggle for sovereignty and security. The United States plays a crucial role in providing assistance to Ukraine, and the outcome of these ongoing negotiations will impact the future of the conflict.
