Bhopal, the capital city of Madhya Pradesh, is currently under a Red Alert due to a surge in cybercrime incidents related to a fake version of WhatsApp called Pink WhatsApp. Users who have fallen victim to this scam have had their private data compromised, with as many as 28 hacking incidents reported in the past month alone.
The Pink WhatsApp hoax entices users by offering them premium features such as hiding online status, tracking hidden last seen, and other attractive options. However, those who have fallen for this scam unknowingly install malicious software on their mobile devices, allowing scammers to gain access to their personal information.
Once the fake Pink WhatsApp application is installed, hackers are able to infiltrate the device, granting them access to private data including gallery photos, text messages, social media accounts, contacts, and other sensitive information. Despite these alarming incidents, no formal complaints or FIRs (First Information Reports) have been filed as the victims have not experienced any financial losses, such as money being deducted from their bank accounts.
One of the victims, HK Sharma, a resident of Katara Hills, received a link on his phone on June 24, prompting him to install the Pink WhatsApp application. However, as soon as he installed it, his WhatsApp stopped working and his device was hacked. After unsuccessful attempts to restore the application, HK Sharma sought assistance from the cyber crime cell to resolve the issue.
Another Bhopal resident, Subodh Ahirwar, experienced a similar situation. After installing Pink WhatsApp, all the UPI (Unified Payments Interface) applications on his phone stopped working. The cyber crime cell has taken note of this incident and launched investigations into the matter.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Shrutkirti Somwanshi has issued a warning to Bhopal residents via Twitter, urging them not to install Pink WhatsApp on their devices. The cyber crime cell plans to release further advisories to raise awareness about the scam and prevent more people from falling victim to it. However, the gangs or individuals responsible for the Pink WhatsApp scam have not yet been identified.
