Fianna Fáil TD, Paul McAuliffe, has issued a warning about an increase in scam texts ahead of the Christmas season. He called on phone companies to take action against these fraudulent messages. McAuliffe highlighted the various methods scammers use, including phone calls, text messages, WhatsApp messages, and emails, impersonating government agencies, banks, delivery services, and businesses.

One particular scam involves a text claiming to be from Gov.ie, offering a discounted electricity bill under the Energy Support Scheme. McAuliffe urged phone companies to utilize advanced security tools to identify and block such harmful messages. He emphasized that the additional payments announced in Budget 2024, such as electricity credits and lump sum payments for social welfare benefits, will be automatically credited or paid without requiring individuals to apply. Any text messages or emails suggesting otherwise should be regarded as scams.

McAuliffe also stressed that government officials will never request bank details over the phone or seek personal information through text messages. In the event of falling victim to a scam or fraud, he advised reporting the incident to both the Gardaí and the relevant company or organization involved, who can provide guidance on the next steps.

It is essential for individuals to remain cautious during this festive period and be vigilant against fraudulent messages. The surge in scam texts necessitates proactive measures from phone companies to protect their customers. By being aware of common scam tactics and spreading awareness among peers, people can help prevent others from falling victim to these schemes.

In conclusion, McAuliffe encouraged the public to stay informed and report any suspicious activity to the authorities and relevant organizations. By remaining vigilant, individuals can protect themselves and their finances from falling into the hands of scammers during the holiday season.
