Benue State Governor, Reverend Father Hyacinth Alia, has revealed the reasons behind the freeze on the state’s accounts, stating that it is a necessary measure to prevent further looting of the state treasury. He made this statement during his first meeting with state media practitioners in Makurdi. Alia’s administration recently discovered that some senior employees in the state were receiving pay from multiple sources, including the state, local government, and the State Universal Basic Education Board.
When asked about the continued closure of the state accounts, the governor explained that there are still individuals waiting to take advantage of any opportunities that arise. He likened them to hyenas and hawks, stating that landmines have been set, and freezing the accounts is a necessary step to protect the state’s finances. He also mentioned that upon investigation into the various parastatals, ministries, and agencies, there were alarming findings that justify the continued freeze on the accounts.
However, the governor assured that any government parastatal in need can bring forth their request, and it will be considered and addressed accordingly. This ensures that necessary expenses are met, even while the accounts remain frozen.
Addressing rumors of a strained relationship with his political godfather, Senator George Akume, Governor Alia emphasized that he has a harmonious and cordial relationship with the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF). He referred to those spreading false information about a brewing crisis as ‘saboteurs’ who aim to profit from the situation. In fact, Alia revealed plans for a grand reception to celebrate the SGF’s return to the state, emphasizing the need to celebrate rather than insinuate negativity.
The governor further expressed his accessibility and willingness to engage with the people. Despite the demanding nature of his job, he pledged to create a day for anyone without official business to come and chat with him. Alia acknowledged that people often approach him, requesting commissioner positions for their friends. However, he emphasized the limited number of positions available and encouraged patience for the next term.
Regarding his cabinet composition, Governor Alia assured that he has fulfilled the constitutional provision. He acknowledged the existence of domestic debts that need to be addressed, emphasizing the necessity of clearing those obligations.
