The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has sent another summons to West Bengal Law Minister Malay Ghatak to appear at its headquarters in New Delhi on June 26 for questioning in relation to a multi-crore coal smuggling case. The Minister was previously summoned on June 19 but did not attend the ED’s Delhi office, citing other engagements in light of the upcoming panchayat polls in Bengal. According to sources, the ED had given Ghatak 13 days notice, but he still failed to attend. This isn’t the first time Ghatak has dodged a summons – he also skipped one on March 23 this year.
Last year, ED officials conducted a raid and search operation at Ghatak’s home, as well as the residences of his relatives in Asansol, West Burdwan district, and Kolkata. At the time, Ghatak was questioned at length by the agency.
The ED has reportedly been investigating a coal smuggling case that involves illegal mining and transportation of coal in the Asansol-Raniganj area by a group of people allegedly linked to influential politicians, including the West Bengal Law Minister.
Ghatak’s association with the case has led to much questioning and speculation, especially given his position in the West Bengal government. As the investigation continues, it remains to be seen whether Ghatak will finally appear before the ED for questioning.
