Amid a deadlock in the appointment of interim vice-chancellors (VCs) in 27 universities in West Bengal, Governor Dr C V Ananda Bose, in his role as the chancellor of universities, has started appointing interim VCs to all the varsities where vacancies exist. The move has drawn criticism from West Bengal Education Minister Bratya Basu, who claims the decision is unilateral and violates the law. The governor, however, seems to have applied a middle-path approach, retaining only those VCs who complied with instructions to send activity reports to the Chancellery for review. The Raj Bhavan statement also assures stakeholders that future appointments of interim VCs will be done accommodating the views of the government.
