Shirley J. Bailey: A Life Filled with Music and a Warm Smile
CLINTON – Shirley J. Bailey, a beloved resident of Woodlands Senior Living and Memory Care, peacefully passed away at the age of 83 on December 4, 2023. Born on February 11, 1940, in Wiscasset, Shirley was the daughter of Ernest and Dorothy Grover. She will be remembered for her joyous spirit, love for her family, passion for music, and her infectious smile that brightened the lives of everyone around her.
Shirley spent her entire life in Maine, graduating from Wiscasset High School and eventually serving as the Town Clerk in Clinton for a remarkable 17 years. She was a dedicated public servant who left a lasting impact on her community.
Despite battling dementia, Shirley’s love for music never wavered. She had an incredible ability to remember the lyrics to every Country and Gospel song she sang. Her melodic voice brought joy and comfort to those who had the privilege of hearing her sing. Her passion for music was just one aspect of the vibrant person she was.
In addition to her musical talents, Shirley enjoyed spending time with her family, playing Bingo, and trying her luck at the casinos. She also found solace and relaxation in solving puzzles. Her positive attitude, even in the face of challenges, inspired everyone she met.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, six siblings, her husband Donald, and her son Larry. She is survived by her four children: Brenda Libby and fiance Ron Chipman of Poland; Terry Ledford and husband Wayne Ledford of Peoria, Arizona; Donald C. Bailey Jr. and wife Arlene Bailey of Gladys, Virginia; and Rodney Bailey and wife Debbie Bailey of Sidney. She is also survived by her daughter-in-law Tammie Frappier Bailey, as well as 11 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Her brother Herbert Grover of Wiscasset remains to cherish her memory.
Shirley will be laid to rest at the Maine Veterans Cemetery alongside her beloved husband on May 10, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. A Celebration of Life gathering will be held on May 11, 2024, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Wiscasset Community Center. This will be an opportunity for friends, family, and community members to honor Shirley’s life and share their fond memories of her.
